Though Indian car market has been predominantly ruled by petrol driven cars, there has been a change in the trend being noticed over last few years. People are now gradually shifting to diesel cars as diesel cars are more fuel efficient and economical. Moreover, diesel cars seem to have more power than petrol driven cars.
Today there are just a handful options available in the market for Diesel cars. Though TATA Indica Diesel has been the bestseller in its segment, it is facing strong competition from Maruti Zen Diesel and Fiat Palio.
In the luxury sedan segment, General Motors' recently launched Optra Magnum TCDi is receiving rave reviews from auto experts. The Optra Magnum is giving tough competition to its counterparts like Skoda Octavia and Toyota Corolla which have been dominating the diesel segment for a long time. Optra Magnum TCDi has an engine that utilizes second-generation common rail technology. Diesel fuel is injected at a very high pressure of 1,600 bar through a multi-step injection process. This results in more efficient combustion and performance. The new engine also has an Electric Vacuum Control Turbo, which further enhances performance. The Optra diesel is faster and more powerful than many petrol driven cars currently on the market, delivering peak power of 120.5 ps and peak torque of 314 Nm which is more than 100 Nm higher than the Skoda Octavia.
In addition, the car's Engine Management System of Optra Magnum was programmed and re-engineered to ensure that the engine delivers optimum performance in all driving conditions in India on locally available fuel.
