Why Are Gas Prices So High » Historical Gas Prices

Gas Wars: A Return to the Old Days in Atlanta, Georgia

If you are old enough to remember gas wars from the 60's, then you will understand what happened in Atlanta this past week. It was really incredible.

My 12 year old son likes to keep track of the fluctuating price of a gallon of gas. He thinks I am making it up when I tell him I can remember when a gallon of gas was 39 cents and what a shock it was for everyone in the 80's when the price of a gallon of gas went over one dollar.

Just the other day I was telling him about gas wars, how gas stations would dramatically drop their prices, and then the other stations across the street would drop their prices in order to compete. He thought I was making that up too.

Not that I have ever made stories up to play with him. This has come back to haunt me more than a few times.

Gas at $1.99 a Gallon?

Remember what I big deal it was when gas passed a dollar a gallon?

This past week in Dekalb County, one of the many counties that make up Atlanta, Georgia, one gas station lowered their prices to $1.99 for a gallon of gas. The lines started right away of course. It looked like something out of the 1970's.

And of course, the stations in the area did not like it very much at all. So one of the neighboring stations dropped their prices too.

I hope it's a trend. And I'm glad my son believes me now too.
